Seasonal Dressing for the Devoted Horse Owner: A Year-Round Guide

Guest Blog by Rydale Clothing

Owning and caring for horses isn’t something you dip in and out of when the weather suits. Come rain, shine, wind, or frost, you’re out there getting stuck in — mucking out, riding, and checking on your horses.  It’s a lifestyle that demands the right clothing all year round.  Comfort, practicality, and durability are key, but it's great to look stylish too.

Ready to update your equestrian wardrobe?  Here’s a guide to dressing for every season so you can tackle your equine duties whatever the forecast throws at you.

Spring – Layers for the Unpredictable Months

Spring can be glorious one minute and torrential the next.  You’ll probably start the morning in sunshine and end it in a hailstorm, so layering is your best friend here.

  • Lightweight waterproof jackets are essential for those April showers. Go for something breathable to avoid overheating while mucking out.

  • Thermal base layers help you adapt to changing temperatures without feeling bulky, so you can move freely without restriction.

  • Waterproof yard boots will save you from the inevitable mud — and keep your socks dry when you misjudge that puddle by the stable door.

  • Keep a pair of gloves handy that are thin enough for fiddly jobs like fastening buckles, but still offer some protection from the cold. Even though the sun is shining a little longer, springtime can be particularly chilly.

Make sure your outfits are flexible — be ready to peel off or add on layers as the weather changes (because you can never rely on the forecast!).

Summer – Keeping Cool and Protected

Long days in the saddle and bright mornings in the yard are a joy, but summer brings its own challenges — namely heat, sunburn, and flies.

  • Choose lightweight tops to keep cool and dry during long rides or busy mornings. Materials like nylon or spandex are usually best thanks to their breathability and moisture-wicking properties.

  • Light colours help reflect the sun’s rays, keeping you that little bit cooler. Stick to something like grey or blue – these are light enough for perfect temperature control, yet won’t highlight muck and grime as easily as beige or cream.

  • Flies can be relentless, so opt for fly-repellent fabrics or accessories if you’re particularly bothered when riding out.

  • Ventilated riding boots or breathable half chaps make a huge difference on sweltering days, allowing heat to escape where it often gets trapped.

Autumn – Preparing for the Turn

Autumn is all about transitions – and will likely involve a few wardrobe transitions as you keep up with the changing temperatures throughout the day. The mornings tend to start chilly, then the low sunlight brings warmth in the afternoon, and rain is usually a regular visitor.

  • A mid-weight waterproof coat will keep you dry without feeling too heavy, and add warmth when there’s a chill in the air.

  • Fleece gilets are perfect for extra warmth without restricting your arms when riding or grooming. Choose a lightweight, slimline design if you plan on layering with t-shirts and jackets, or go for something thicker when styling alone.

  • Swap out lighter socks for thermal pairs to keep toes cosy on cold mornings.

  • As daylight hours shorten, reflective or high-vis gear is a must if you’re hacking out in the evenings. Go for something fleece lined for added insulation.

Top tip: The autumn months offer the perfect opportunity to waterproof your boots and reproof wax jackets before winter really sets in.

Winter – Braving the Elements

This is where your clothing really earns its keep.  Winter in the yard means biting winds, frozen taps, the occasional snowfall, and a lot of mud.  So, you need a kit that can keep up with the demands of proper winter living in the countryside.

  • Invest in an insulated, windproof coat designed with equestrian movement in mind — you need to be warm but still able to lift bales and muck out without feeling restricted.

  • Thermal base layers are a game-changer for temperatures below zero. Designed to lock in heat next to your skin, you’ll be toasty without the bulk – perfect for active days at the stables.

  • Waterproof, insulated yard boots will keep feet warm and dry even when the ground is frozen.

  • Slim neck warmers and hats fit under helmets easily, and make a huge difference on icy mornings.

Top tip: Have a couple of quick-drying layers to hand — nothing is more miserable than pulling on yesterday’s damp coat.

A Checklist of Essentials to Keep in the Tack Room, regardless of the season:

  • A good pair of all-weather gloves.

  • Waterproof over-trousers for sudden downpours and mucking out.

  • High-visibility outerwear for road riding or hacking out in low light.

  • Full length Wellington boots with a cosy neoprene lining.

Looking after your horse is a year-round commitment that requires true grit and devotion, especially when the nights are long and the days are cold.  That’s why it’s important to invest in the right gear to make every job easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
